Subject To Industry

These pieces explore the formal characteristics of materials that are commonly used in residential and commercial construction and manufacturing. The designs showcase the materials in a formal and abstract way that finally emphasizes their visual characteristics in a way that refers to the materials originally intended use. The artwork is inspired by and displayed much like these materials originally would have been seen in their intended setting. After their value has seemingly been dismissed by being used discarded or somebody forgotten the sculptures bring new life to the materials. The textures patterns line quality and colors of the materials are rearranged to emphasize their aesthetic beauty. The form displays these aspects predominately for the viewer in a deliberate and thoughtful way while also reminding of you that these materials are ordinary and can be found everywhere. The sculptures nudge the viewer to reflect upon their own ideas of beauty value and art.

Botanics

Botanics is a body of work that plays with the organic unpredictability of nature while also illustrating its affinity to follow patterns and geometric formulas. These sculpture are also influenced by Japanese floral prints and modern industrial design. The beautiful line quality makes the heavy and industrial materials look light, delicate and elegant.

They are all hand made, one of a kind sculptures made from steel and cast iron by Julie Chabrian in 2018. She carved the “flowers”, took molds of them and pour molted iron into the molds using the cupolette furnace “Sputnik” located at the University of North Florida, in Jacksonville FL. Each flower is finished by hand, and threaded so that they securely thread onto the steel stem. There is some coloring with most of raw gritty materials exposed. The pieces are sealed to prevent rusting.
